Plantation Shutters

A more permanent, furniture-like finish at the window. Adjustable louvers change light and privacy without raising a fabric shade, and the custom frame makes the treatment feel integrated with the opening rather than added in front of it.

Discount Best Blinds and Shutters measures and installs custom shutters in real wood and moisture-tolerant materials throughout Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. We help you compare material, louver size, frame style, panel layout and finish at the window before anything is ordered.

The Three Lines

Plantation Shutters for Sonoma County Homes

Shutters are usually chosen when the homeowner wants the window itself to look more finished. Because the panels and frames are custom-sized to the opening, they read more like built-in millwork than a removable blind or shade, which is what makes them suit front-facing rooms, living areas and any space where the window trim is part of the design.

Heritance hardwood plantation shutters in natural wood finish
Real hardwood

Heritance® Hardwood Shutters

The genuine wood option. Solid hardwood louvers with the grain visible in the finish, which is why this is the line to specify when the shutters need to sit alongside wood floors, wood trim, or a stained built-in. Keep it to the dry rooms: a wood louver above a shower or over a range eventually swells and stops closing evenly.

Finish
Paint or stain
Best for
Dry rooms — living and dining rooms, bedrooms, studies
NewStyle hybrid composite plantation shutters in white
Composite

NewStyle® Hybrid Shutters

A wood-composite core wrapped in Hunter Douglas's Finetech low-luster finish. The core carries the weight and density people associate with a solid wood shutter while the finish reads as smooth painted hardwood, in five curated white tones. Truemill dovetail joinery keeps the panels from racking, and the composite resists warping, fading and chipping far better than a wood louver.

Finish
Painted only — composite does not take a wood stain
Best for
Dry rooms where a painted finish is wanted over grain
Palm Beach Polysatin vinyl plantation shutters in white
Vinyl

Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters

A UV-stabilized Polysatin compound reinforced with aluminum channels inside each stile, so it will not flex or sag the way lesser vinyl shutters do. The Palm Beach Promise guarantees it against warping, cracking, fading, peeling and discolouring for as long as you own the home, which is why we specify it above a shower or over a range.

Finish
Painted only — vinyl does not take a wood stain
Best for
Wet rooms — kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, pool houses

Match the material to the room rather than to a price. Real wood gives you natural grain, lighter panels and the depth of a stained or painted wood finish, and it belongs in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and offices where the material itself is part of the decision. Composite and polysatin hold up better in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and anywhere moisture, temperature change or frequent cleaning would be hard on natural wood. Using different materials in different rooms is normal; keeping the louver size and color coordinated is what makes the house read as one job.

We avoid promising a fixed resale return, because what any window treatment does to home value depends on the property and the market. What we will say is that a well-fitted shutter is rigid, repairable and read by a buyer as part of the house rather than something the seller is taking with them.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A well-made interior shutter can give you many years of use, because the treatment is rigid, repairable and mounted to the window rather than repeatedly folding or rolling fabric. Service life still depends on material, hardware, sun exposure and maintenance, so go by the manufacturer warranty rather than a guaranteed lifespan.

Shutters feel more permanent and become part of the visual finish of the opening, while blinds are lighter and easier to replace. If you want flexibility and less visual weight, blinds may be the better choice. If you want the window to look built-in, shutters can justify the additional cost.

Many specialty shapes can be custom-templated, but availability depends on the exact geometry and the shutter material. We inspect and measure the opening before confirming the design, so the finished panel follows the window instead of leaving awkward gaps.

Routine care is dusting with a soft cloth or a vacuum brush attachment. Painted composite and polysatin shutters tolerate a damp wipe better than natural wood. Wood shutters should be cleaned with as little moisture as possible and dried promptly to protect the finish.
